Digital Book Nook recently caught up with Jordan Spicer, author of “Tales of Reverba: A New Ember.” We are excited to share this insightful interview with our readers today.
When did you first discover that you enjoy writing and wanted to become a published author?
I always like stories and writing them since a young age. I would often daydream on long car rides, during school, on my walks home basically all the time. I also would write stories randomly both online and in a notebook over the years.
When I thought about writing stories professionally, I always pictured myself writing for the video game industry as that was the big thing during my childhood and to me seemed like the future of storytelling. But I would say the moment where I wanted to push for being a published author was during college, I had a pretty hard depression spiral and realized I was happiest when creating stories and new worlds. So, I gathered my ideas from over the years flushed out one and started writing. A few years and a few rewrites later, here we are.
What is your favorite and the most challenging aspect of writing?
I love immersing myself in the world, creating the characters, cultures, happy and sad moments, fight scenes the whole shebang. The most challenging aspect so far has been the publishing stuff, there was a lot of things I didn’t know I needed to make the book as successful as possible and doing it for the first time was pretty exhausting to be honest.
Tell us about your latest release.
Tales of Reverba: A New Ember is the first book of the Tales of Reverba series as well as the first book in the story of fire series which is one of the branching stories in Tales of Reverba. This story follows Jordan, a warm, fun loving and sometimes stubborn black man from Texas who along with others was abducted from Earth and dropped randomly in the world of Reverba by a mysterious Train. He is forced to adapt and survive if he wants to figure out what happened and what the Train really was.
How did you come up with the title of your book?
The first part “Tales of Reverba” was a way to give a sense that this is a collection of stories about the world called Reverba. The second part “A New Ember” refers to the start of the story of fire, thus a new ember in the world. Will this ember grow to a wildfire, or will it get snuffed out before it grows out of control? Only time will tell.
What do you hope readers are able to get from reading your book?
An immersive experience, I hope the trials of all the characters resonate with the readers. I also hope some of the messages I put in the book helps someone or at least gives them a different perspective to view their problems from.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
A lot of my inspirations came from the east more than the west with names like Eiichiro Oda, Koyoharu Gotouge, Kohei Horikoshi, Yoshihiro Togashi and Akira Toriyama being ones that come to mind. I would also say Brandon Sanderson and Ruth Ware have been mind-tingling experiences.
Do you have any advice for writers looking to get published?
First the biggest piece of advice, write something. You can’t get published if you don’t write anything. The second piece of advice is don’t be afraid to reach out and get help, there are a lot of articles and vets who are willing to help out new authors. Your friends and family are also good sources of help as well. Finally, don’t be afraid to talk about your book.
Tales of Reverba: A New Ember is available at Amazon on Kindle and in paperback.
